"The will was powerful. The workshop was full of smoke, my eyes were red and my pants were burning. There was a vacuum cleaner and everything...', said glassblower Terho Välimäki in 2000, recalling the first works of art produced using the fixed-blowing method in the early 1960s.
At the time, Sarpaneva had been experimenting with glass master Reino 'Reka' Löflund to create a free-form pattern on the surface of the glass. After several unsuccessful attempts, the firing technique was successful and the so-called Finlandia sculptures were created. The Shadows glass sculpture is part of the original collection from the 1960s. These sculptures were produced in small numbers and were not numbered.
