Joonas Laakso (b. 1980) is a glass and visual artist from Riihimäki, whose art glass combines solid professionalism with insightful vision. Laakso wanted to be an artist from childhood, but interest in glass arose in adulthood after seeing glassmaking in Ylöjärvi in the early 2000 s. In glassmaking, he was impressed by its technical challenge. Joonas Laakso went to Nuutajärvi to study glass and become the apprentice of master glassblower Jaakko Liikanen. In 2010, Laakso co-founded the cooperative Lasism.
In his works, Laakso combines various techniques such as incalmo, ring technique, filigree and glass engraving. Often the starting point is a technical challenge and its solution. Despite his young age, Joonas Laakso has already gained a reputation as an exceptionally talented glassblower and glass artist with an original and fresh vision in addition to strong technical know-how. Joona Laakso already has a few solo exhibitions behind him, and his works have been acquired for private and public collections.
