Robert Winfield var en känd möbelsnickare. Designen för denna gungstol, visades upp för första gången på världsutställningen 1851. Winfield var då känd för att ha gjort bärbara fåtöljer och militärens sängbottnar i metall. Han vann flera priser för sina arbeten och kan betraktas som en innovatör inom området.
