Folio [37,5 by 24,5 cm]. [16], 704; XVI, 768; [12], XX, 882 pp. + 3 engraved title-leaves + 5 engraved portraits + 24 engraved maps and plans (16 double-page and/or folding). 302 engravings (180 depicting coins and medals) and 45 engraved initials in the text.

Contemporary full calf, rubbed.
Engraved titles to first two volumes with repairs to margins and mounted, a few leaves torn without loss, last few leaves of volume one affected by light waterstaining mainly to inner margin.

First German edition of Konung Carl den XII:s historia. 1-2. (Stockholm 1740), translated by Johann Heinrich Heubel, a three-volume study of the King as person and a ruler.
Charles XII [1682-1718], king of Sweden 1697-1718, an absolute monarch who defended his country for 18 years during the Great Northern War and promoted significant domestic reforms. He launched a disastrous invasion of Russia, resulting in complete collapse of the Swedish armies and the loss of Sweden's status as a great power.
