Hans Wigert – Paintings and Prints F617

With his paintings of the nature around his home in Stavsnäs and his beloved summer home in Grundsunda, Ångermanland, Hans Wigert made a name for himself as one of Sweden's foremost contemporary nature painters. His paintings were expressive, with strong brushstrokes in muted colours. Despite their almost naive style, they express both tenderness and tragedy, with motifs from everyday life, reflecting the whole cycle of human life, with both life and death.

Wigert's prints are more stylised, depicting people, animals and nature. They are characterised by spontaneity and creativity, often with a touch of humour in both subjects and titles. All the works in this auction come from Wigert's own collection and have been passed down to the artist's immediate family.

Hans Wigert trained at the Gerlesborg School (1958) and the Royal Institute of Art, 1960-65. Since the early 1960s, he has participated in a large number of exhibitions around Sweden. Wigert was the first recipient of the Bror Marklund Grundsunda Scholarship in 1965 and received the Prince Eugen Medal for artistic achievement in 2004. He was represented for many years by the Lars Bohman Gallery. Hans Wigert is represented in the collections of the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, among others.
