Muurame Church was completed in 1929 and was Alvar Aalto's first realized church design. The church’s architecture reflects influences from Aalto’s 1924 trip to Italy, particularly Italian church architecture.
The interior and furnishings of the church were designed jointly by Aino and Alvar Aalto. The design was complemented by modern lamps by Poul Henningsen, which represented the progressive design of their time.
Over the years, the church has undergone several alterations, but a major renovation in 2016 restored it to its original form – including the original colors and details.
