Einar Jolin
(Sweden, 1890-1976)

Einar Jolin,"Blomster med fruktfat och snäcka”.

Signed Jolin and dated 1956. Oil on canvas 38 x 46 cm.

More information

More than anyone else, Einar Jolin followed his teacher Matisse's advice that art should offer ‘luxury, tranquillity and pleasure’. The work of art should be a piece of jewellery, radiating harmony and beauty.

This is particularly evident in the auction's painting, "Blomster med fruktfat och snäcka” from 1956.

Einar Jolin painted city views from the heights of Södermalm, excelled with colourful and tranquil floral still lifes, folklife images from the more elegant neighbourhoods, models and portraits of women. In the 20th century, Einar Jolin became the Stockholm painter above others. One motif to which he constantly returned was his view from his studio on Katarinaberget, always a quiet Sunday in the city.

All non-essentials have been stripped away. The stylised shapes convey a pure, elegant expression in soft, gentle colours.

The artist Einar Jolin studied at the Technical School, the Artists' Association School and at the Academie Matisse in Paris. He was an expressionist with a penchant for naive painting and was good friends with Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald and Nils von Dardel.
