Provenance

From the collection of Dag Malm (1923-2008). Thence by descent. Dag Malm was born in 1923 in Rahden, Germany. His father was a Swedish businessman operating in Argentina, and his mother was Norwegian. Dag grew up in Germany but moved to Sweden when the Second World War broke out. In 1947, he was employed as an attaché in the Swedish Foreign Ministry and had postings in Washington, Tokyo, Beijing, and New York. From 1964 to 1967, he served as ambassador in Kinshasa. In the late 1940s, he worked as an attaché in Tokyo. He was then sent to Beijing, where he worked with the Swedish Ambassador Thorsten Hammarström (Ambassador of Nanjing in 1947, and in Beijing from 1950). He writes in his memoirs about life in China at the time, his purchases of antiques and art, and the social life with delegates from other countries. When Sweden appointed Staffan Söderblom as ambassador, Dag spent a lot of time with the British representative Sir Lionel Lamb and his wife, since Staffan's wife Marjorie was British and became a close friend of theirs. Dag Malm writes that when he left China in 1953, he wrote to Wai Chou Pu, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to seek permission to bring furniture and works of art with him. He continued to have a long international diplomatic career, was appointed head of office at the Swedish Committee on Foreign Affairs in 1971, and in 1975 he became inspector of the foreign administration and head of the administrative department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1978 to 1981. From 1981 to 1988, he was ambassador in Vienna. After his retirement, he settled in Södermanland and was often hired as an expert adviser and worked with translations. Dag Malm passed away in 2008 at the age of 85.
