Josef Frank with Friends – Summer Edition F456

During the 1930s, Estrid Ericson (1894-1981), the founder of Svenskt Tenn, initiated a successful collaboration with the Austrian architect and interior designer Josef Frank (1885-1967). The first major exhibition featuring Frank's designs for Svenskt Tenn was held at Liljevalchs Konsthall in 1934, where the generous Liljevalchs sofa was among the showcased pieces for the first time. Josef Frank went on to create many classics that adorned both homes and public institutions, leaving a profound mark on Swedish design history and being regarded today as one of the most important furniture designers in Sweden during the 20th century. Frank's furniture and interior pieces have become timeless icons over time.

This summer's theme, "Josef Frank with friends," in conjunction with Svenskt Tenn's 100th anniversary, is particularly rich in Josef Frank's popular design classics, such as the beloved daybed "model 775," "Nationalmuseiskåpet, model 881," and the round coffee table "model 2139." The auction also includes a number of rare vintage pieces, many with interesting provenance. Additionally, there are two fine watercolours by Josef Frank.

Estrid Ericson had the knack for continuously attracting skilled designers to Svenskt Tenn, and since her passing, the company has continued with the same ambition. In addition to Estrid Ericson's and Josef Frank's designs, there are pewter items by, among others, Nils Fougstedt and Eric Ericson, as well as textiles by Margit Thorén and Lena Revell.
