The Claritas collection began to take shape at the Iittala glass factory in late 1983. At that time, a training workshop for young glassblowers was set up at the factory. It had been noticed that glass craftsmanship was beginning to fade away as machine glassmaking took over. Sarpaneva took over as leader of the training workshop.
Claritas techniques are demanding, and well suited to further training for professionals. The first works developed the insertion of air bubbles between layers of glass. The factory's clear glazing mass, suitable for this technique, worked as expected. The bubbles held their shape.
The works created from the first pieces are finished, polished and solid. "The boys' time was not wasted, nor the glass," said Sarpaneva years later.
