Throughout his artistic career, Sarpaneva was a bold experimenter and an idea seeker. He tested different materials, molding techniques, and his co-workers. He was interested in exploring the limits of what was possible. His experiments resulted in unique and exquisite works that were never meant to be replicated.
This anonymous art glass piece from 1982 is a perfect example of his work. The heavy, mouth-blown artwork requires not only physical strength from the glassblower but also complete control of the material. The massive layered glass is blown freely between hot iron bars, creating the vivid visual impressions that are typical of Sarpaneva's art glass production.
