Literature

The glass sculpture Liber Ammiana is one of the last works in Sarpaneva's nearly seven-decade-long career as an artist. The massive work is a synthesis. The book-shaped sculpture refers to the Liber Mundi collection. However, the pages do not have the typical smoke pattern, but large 'air lenses' characteristic of the works in the Ammiana collection. The work required almost superhuman efforts from the glassblowers. Combining two elements, the already treated glass and the molten mass, seemed an impossible task. It was more likely to fail than to succeed. Liber Ammiana was so challenging to fulfill that it remained the only work in the planned series, making it all the more impressive.
