More information

More than anyone else, Einar Jolin followed his teacher, Henri Matisse's advice, that art should offer "luxury, tranquility and pleasure".

The work of art would be a piece of jewelry, radiating harmony and beauty. It is especially clear and obvious in the auction's colorful painting, the still life painting "Fruit plate with bowl, shell and red flowers" from 1956.

Einar Jolin painted city views from Söder's heights, brilliant with colorful and peaceful still lifes of flowers, pictures of folk life from the more elegant quarters, models and portraits of women.

During the 20th century, Einar Jolin became the Stockholm painter above all others. A motif that he constantly returned to was his view from the studio at Katarinaberget, always a Sunday-quiet metropolis. All non-essentials are stripped away. The stylized forms convey in soft mild colors a clean, elegant expression.

The artist Einar Jolin studied at the Technical School in Stockholm, the Art Association's school in Stockholm and at the recognized Academie Matisse in Paris. He was an expressionist with a preference for naive painting and was a friend and colleague of Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald and Nils von Dardel.

Among several large museums in the Nordics, he is represented at the National Museum, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmö Museum, the National Gallery in Oslo and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.
