Takashi Murakami is one of the most celebrated artists to emerge from post-war Asia. He is known for his signature "Superflat" aesthetic: a colorful, two-dimensional style that crosses the line between art and pop culture as it combines elements of anime, Japanese nihonga and ukiyo-e woodcuts. Common motifs in Murakami's work – which spans paintings, sculptures, prints and more – include smiling flowers, bears and the Mickey Mouse-inspired character Mr. DOB. Murakami is represented at, among others, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, MoMA PS1, Mori Art Museum, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum, Museum für Moderne Kunst and Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago
