The legendary underground artist and avant-garde musician Mat Brinkman, born in 1973 and based in Colorado, is a co-founder of art collectives Fort Thunder and Forcefield. Known for nonsensical avant-garde art comics in his earlier years, Brinkman gravitated towards drawing creatures of more and more grotesque monstrosity in his later, and excellent works in ink on paper. Deeply sinister yet darkly humorous, Brinkman’s extensive repertoire of monsters exposed an unbridled, explosive and significant creative capacity.
Notoriously uninterested in pursuing a career in the established art world, Brinkman’s few gallery shows are largely due to the efforts of the gallerists at Loyal Gallery in Stockholm, who have been instrumental in promoting Brinkman’s work on the gallery scene.
Brinkman has also exhibited at the Whitney Biennial 2002 as part of the Forcefield art collective, been included in the popular touring shows Mail Order Monsters, as well as New York Minute, curated by Kathy Grayson, gallerist at The Hole in New York, where Brinkman also exhibited.
