"The basic features of the painting are its clear lines and solid form. Though completed in 1889, the development of the layout is already evident from preliminary studies dating from two years earlier. Offered as a raffle prize immediately on completion, the painting was never officially exhibited or appraised, remaining unknown to the public until finally forming part of an exhibition to mark the artist’s 70th birthday in 1937.
The most instructive and intensive period for the growth of Hanna Frosterus as an artist was probably the two years that followed her first train journey to Paris in January 1888, and she created her two most important works on returning to Finland."
