More information

Timo Sarpaneva often did his design work in industrial plants, where he had direct contact with staff and materials. This type of work provides a unique starting point for material experiments that are essential for creating new ways of working and distinctive products. The glass factory was an endless source of inspiration for Sarpaneva, not just for glass. In many ways, he studied the possibilities of utilizing the 'heat' of the mill in his work. The 'Steel Landscape' from 1981 is the first metal work created in the glow of the glass factory furnaces. The heat patinated and bent the steel according to how the artist placed his raw material on top of or in front of a burning glass oven. 'The Steel Landscape' had the honorary place at the home of Sarpaneva. Inspired by it, the artist continued his experiments after a few years. 'The Steel Landscape' is a key work in Sarpaneva's production, which opened up a new genre for the artist and also encouraged the glassfactory staff to try new ones.
