LYNX.
Sign. Schilkin Arabia. Glazed stoneware, height 61,5 cm.
Russian-born Michael Schilkin (1900-1962) worked in Arabia as a ceramics sculptor. Schilkin's works were also renowed internationally, and in the 1937 Paris World's Fair he was awarded the gold medal. Schilkin also received Pro Finlandia in 1958.
The delightful sculptures of animals are genuinely animated. Schilkin was able to create strong characters of ceramics, which during the wars were even considered as symbolic pieces for Finland's independency.
The lynx now on sale sits calmly and alert. The grey-brownish glaze makes the surface look like soft fur.
