MARIANNA UUTINEN, "RED STATEMENT".
A tergo sign. 2001. Acrylic on canvas 190x140 cm.
Galleri Lars Bohman, Stockholm.
In their expressive technique and material abundance, the works of Finnish artist Marianna Uutinen bear a certain semblance to the action painting style. Through trial and error, she has arrived at an individual approach in which the material continually erupts beyond the confines of the canvas, with the full force of the painting invading the surrounding space. By permitting a physical, almost sculptured shape of the material, she liberates the painting from its intrinsic two-dimensionality to create a continuous flow of colour and form.
Uutinen’s works are featured in many public collections, with museum exhibitions including Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Malmö Art Museum, Seoul Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde. Marianna Uutinen represented Finland at the 1997 Venice Biennale.
