"CRESTED TIT AND A PINE CONE".
Sign. 2016. Bronze, height 23 cm.
Pirkko Nukari is a sculptor best known for animal motifs in bronze. This choice of subject places Nukari in an ancient sculpting heritage, as animal sculptures have been carved in Finland since at least Neolithic times. Birds are a recurring theme in these works and although they have considerable symbolic significance, Nukari mainly treats them from the perspective of natural history. Indeed this artist originally entertained career interests in both sculpting and biology, seeking a faithful and accurate mode of visual representation in studies of the natural world and through books and museum collections. These works convey a respect for nature and concern for the destruction that threatens the natural environment.
