First edition of the The Swedish Church Law of 1686

Stockholm, Johan Georg Eberdt, [1687]. 4to. (18,2 x 14,5 cms.) [8] + 274 pp.

Attractive contemporary full calf gilt, slightly worn, gilt device of King Charles XI on front cover (under whose auspices the book was published), all edges gilt. Provenance: Sigfrid Lorentz Gahm Persson (1725-1794), with engraved bookplate, ownership inscription dated Dec. 10, 1761 and neat annotations on rear flyleaves, i.a. about bookbinder Nathanael Goldenau having bound 1548 copies of the book upon publication (presumably Gahm Persson assumed he was the binder of this copy). Parts of the bookplate of Harald Wiens, Löberöd, have been cut out and pasted below that of Gahm Persson.

Collijn col. 479-80. First edition of The Swedish Church Law of 1686, which regulated the relationship between the state and church in Sweden until the Swedish Church Law 1992, as well as in Finland (earlier a Swedish province) until 1870.
