Olaus Magnus:
Historia delle genti et della natura delle cose settentrionali.
In Vinegia (Venice) appresso i Giunti, 1565. Folio. (31 x 21 cms.) [25] (without final blank) + 286 leaves + engraved full-page map of Scandinavia. With over 450 woodcuts in text (incl. repetitions), and two woodcut printer’s devices. The illustrations are almost all printed from the same blocks as the first, latin edition (1555).
Later worn vellum, apparently restored, neat ownership inscription on title by Hamilton Harrison, Roma 1846. Unattractive modern ownership stamp on front pastedown. Final leaf partly loose. Increasing marginal loss towards end of the book, restored with new paper from about leaf 241, small text loss in the printed marginalia from leaf 250 with increasing loss on the final 30 leaves, even affecting the outermost part of the text on last 7 leaves.
Cf Lindberg, Swedish Books, 18. Collijn, 2, pp. 330-2. Second italian edition, but the first complete, and illustrated. The engraved map – very fine in the present copy – faithfully reproduces the woodcut map in the first latin edition (1555).
