With the impressive 4,5-metre folding plate of Karl X Gustav’s funerary procession

Samuel von Pufendorf:

Sieben Bücher von denen Thaten Carl Gustavs Königs in Schweden.

Nürnberg, Christoph Riegels, 1697. Folio (36 x 23,5 cms.) [6] + 734 + [68] + 3-24 pp. + 12 portraits + 114 plates (numbered 1-112 + A + B) + 4,5-metre funerary plate, composed of 7 plates. The portraits depict Karl XI, Pufendorf, Queen Christina, Karl X Gustav, Hedvig Eleonora, Prince Adolphus Ioannes, ”Princeps ac Dominus Dominus Carolus”, P. Brahe, C. G. Wrangel, G. O. Stenbock, M. G. de La Gardie, and G. Bonde.

An attractive copy in contemporary full calf, plate impressions unusually fine and strong for this edition. Spine richly gilt with raised bands, slight wear. Fine internally with just a few small spots, faint dampstains, the occasional marginal nick or short tear, and similar. The funerary plate also fine, with a few small marginal repairs, a recurring dampstain to lower margin of right section, and some creasing of left and right edge due to folding. A gathering of six plates loose, but easily reattached. Two bookplates. Oval stamp of Aalborg diocesan library twice on title in black, old gift inscription to the library on front pastedown.

Lindberg, Swedish Books, 38. Collijn, col. 743.

First German edition of Pufendorf’s history of king Karl X Gustav and the wars in Poland and Denmark, first published in Latin in the previous year. The beautiful plates were largely executed by the same prominent engravers who were also employed for Dahlbergh’s Suecia antiqua et hodierna.
