Norskfödde Kjartan Slettemark var under decennier ett uppskattat inslag i Stockholms konstvärld. Mest känd är han för de många bilderna av Nixon och användningen av dennes foto i sitt eget pass. Hyssen var många men Kjartan var i grunden en mycket känslig och seriös person. Pudelkostymen, nu på Moderna Museet, är legendarisk men utöver mer konceptuell konst så målade Kjartan under hela sin karriär. Bildmässigt så är Nixon-sviten samt de senare bilder med Kjartan själv som Marilyn Monroe kanske de lättaste att ta till sig. Den mindre målningen av Kjartan som Marilyn, upprepad ett antal gånger, framkallar förstås minnen av Warhol.
