More information

The two artist colleagues, Axel Sjöberg and Helmer Osslund were not only one-year-olds, born in the autumn of 1866. They were both enchanted and lyrical about the impressions they experienced, during their personal painting trips to Lappland and Jämtland.
In northern Sweden, the views became larger and more powerful. Both humans and animals are absent in the artists' interpretations of the powerful, northern landscapes.

Axel Sjöberg stood with one leg in the national romantic painting. During periods of his life as an artist, Axel Sjöberg also opened his eyes to modernism, which is clearly evident in the auction's current painting.

In his depictions and interpretations, of the mighty northern nature, Axel Sjöberg came to increase his glowing color and reproduce the magnificent wilderness expanses in flaming shades.

“Axel Sjöberg had his breakthrough during a turning point, between national romanticism and modernism. This is exactly what the curator Olle Granath, former director of the National Museum, points out in the catalog for the newly opened exhibition at Sven-Harrys. But unlike Axel Sjöberg's conservative colleagues (Bruno Liljefors, Anders Zorn, editor's note), the exhibition demonstrates that Axel Sjöberg opened at least one eye to the new art movement.

On a gloomy winter day, it is wonderful to swim in Sjöberg's colorful landscape, especially the oil paintings where he dares to take turns. Like when Sjöberg depicts seabirds in glowing evening lights and sewing against a burning sunset. Or capture dramatic cloud formations and monumental views of the mountain world, with some inspiration from Matisse student Leander Engström. There are a couple of such examples in the exhibition, the best of which from Stora Sjöfallet hangs high up on the wall in the first room - so that the foaming waterfall washes straight down over the audience! ”
Excerpt from a review in Dagens Nyheter, 12/1 2017
