Carl-Gustaf Hiort Af Ornäs

Bukowskis is pleased to present a beautiful collection of furniture by Carl-Gustaf ”Nalle” Hiort af Ornäs (v. 1911-96). Hiort af Ornäs was a Finnish furniture designer who had his own furniture factory, Puunveisto, in Helsinki from the 1940s to the 1970s. He believed in Danish-style handcrafted furniture production of high quality. As a designer, he was ahead of his time in developing impressive plywood furniture with sculpturally curved forms.

Hiort af Ornäs was not a furniture manufacturer aiming at quick profits but an idealist who wanted to develop the production of furniture. He was a designer whose furniture forced other Finnish furniture manufacturers to improve the quality of their products. The high quality of the furniture and its design, which was ahead of its time, aroused major international demand already in the 1950s. Hiort af Ornäs’ furniture was displayed at the Milan Triennale and in Sweden’s best design shops.
