Paavo Tynell – Part One

Bukowskis presents Paavo Tynell – Part One, the first of two themed auctions with a selection of lighting fixtures and lamps designed by Paavo Tynell (1890–1973), one of the most prominent figures in Finnish lighting design. Here, you will find everything from his early, functionalist lamps to more decorative models, all crafted in Tynell’s characteristic materials such as brass and opal glass. Tynell was a pioneer in combining decorative craftsmanship with industrial production, and his lamps quickly gained popularity both in Finland and internationally.

As the founder of Tynell Oy Taito Ab, he played a central role in the development of the Finnish lighting industry during the interwar period. His early works were inspired by traditional chandeliers, but during the 1920s and 1930s, he began experimenting with glass, fabric, and cardboard in his lamps. As material rationing eased after World War II, he started using brass, which led to great success, particularly in the American market. Tynell became a leading designer of lighting for public spaces, with his lamps, featuring organic forms, exuding a unique elegance and functionality.

Consignments are now open for this autumn’s Helsinki Design Sale, auction: 24 April – 4 May, online.
