Gold Coins

A themed auction featuring a collection of gold coins from around the world, minted during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Gold is an important part of our geological world and has been discovered in many parts of the globe. Since the Sumerian civilisation, around 3000 years before Christ, individuals, kingdoms, and states have organised expeditions to find gold.

Since the first gold coins were minted in what is now Libya in the 6th century BC, they have had a significant impact on our development in trade. Throughout our 2,600-year-long history of coinage, enormous quantities of coins have been minted, providing us with insights into the political, economic, and social conditions of the times. A history that tells of the rise and fall of civilisations, of colonisation, trade centres, and the formation of cities and nation-states.

A history that becomes even more fascinating when you can hold a piece of it in your hand; it becomes more interesting and more vivid. And who can forget Prince John's exclamation in Walt Disney’s "Robin Hood": "No, no, they’re running off with all my gold!"

Welcome to explore the items in this themed auction and place your bids on your favourite gold pieces.
