Ernst Josephson was a Swedish artist born in Stockholm. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, at the Louvre, and during travels to Holland, Italy, and France. As a portrait painter, he created a series of magnificent works, including portraits of fellow artists and landscape scenes characterized by a sharp psychological insight and a testament to his brilliant gift for color.
His life was marked by personal tragedies within the family, alongside significant successes as an artist, but not economically. Penniless, he began to dedicate himself to spiritualism and religious contemplation, and he suffered from mental illness. During his period of illness, he created a large number of paintings and drawings inspired by the worlds of fairy tales and myths. Josephson is considered one of Sweden's foremost artists of all time. Today, his work is represented in major museums in Sweden as well as in Denmark, Norway, and Finland.
