During his period of illness, Ernst Josephson creates a large number of paintings and drawings inspired by the worlds of fairy tales and myths. He also publishes collections of poetry; Svarta rosor (1888) and Gula rosor (1896). He har written the following about himself:
"You have been Abraham
You have been David
You have been Peter, the apostle of Jesus Christ
You have been Horace
And you have been Ernst Abraham Josephson
and now you are an angel in the kingdom of heaven."
