Tove Jansson
(Finland, 1914-2001)

On the road

Signed Tove. Ink and watercolour on paper, sheet 25 x 28.5 cm.

Provenance

Gift from the artist 1955 to Walentin Chorell, a Finland-Swedish author, playwright, and screenwriter from Helsinki and a good friend of Tove Jansson.
Subsequently inherited by the current owner.

More information

Tove Jansson and Walentin Chorell were author colleagues and friends through the Finnish Swedish Writers' Association. Around 1955, Walentin told Tove that his daughter was in a scout troop with five other friends and that they had chosen a character and name from the Moomin world. When Tove heard about this, the group was invited to visit her studio in Helsinki. The visit led to the creation of the painting in this auction. Tove Jansson has added the names of the scout members to each of the Moomin characters.
