Allegory of the Four Elements - Water

Executed around 1753. Canvas mounted on panel, 78 x 78 cm.

Provenance

The Plomgren House at Kornhamnstorg, corner of Triewaldsgränd, Stockholm, features a door lintel that was previously part of a suite depicting allegories of the four elements, which were removed when the house was renovated at the end of the 19th century.
Professor Carl Magnus Groth (1831-1908) and his wife Elin (1849-1921), subsequently inherited by their daughter Britta (1884-1958).
Mrs. Britta Gauffin, née Groth, married to Dr. Axel Gauffin (1877-1964), curator at the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.
