Herman Lindqvist
(Sweden, 1868-1923)

Winter motif against Skeppsholmen, Stockholm

Signed H. Lindqvist and dated 1914. Oil on canvas 51 x 62 cm.

More information

Herman Lindqvist's painting from Blasieholmen in Stockholm, next to the National Museum, depicts Skeppsholmen with the Admiralty House. In the background, Södermalm with Sofia Church can be discerned. The year is 1914, and it is a quiet winter day where the sun in the south, with its delicate light, struggles to break through. In the foreground by the quay, a coal barge can be seen.

Herman Lindqvist is primarily known as a chronicler of Stockholm through many of his finely tuned images of the city and its surroundings, and the painting at auction is an example of this.

Lindqvist studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1888 to 1894 and at Axel Tallberg's etching course from 1895 to 1896. He mainly painted scenes of Stockholm and the archipelago, as well as landscape motifs from Skåne and Visby, in the spirit of Impressionism. He has participated in several major exhibitions throughout Sweden. Lindqvist is represented at the National Museum in Stockholm and several other Swedish museums.
