A French late Empire ormolu and patinated bronze lamp, first part 19th century.

Fluted and leaf-clad column shaft, on a square pedestal with relief ornamentation of Apollo with a radiant halo and laurel wreath, internally with a clock movement. Height excluding electrical fittings 78 cm.

In year 1800 Bernard-Guillaume Carcel invented a clockwork mechanism to raise the oil to the wick, no longer necessitating the reservoir to be higher than the wick. In 1836 it was upgraded by Franchot.
