More information

The history of the GMT-Master II begins with reference 16760 in 1983. It is the first GMT-Master to feature the 'Coke' bezel, sapphire crystal, and quickset GMT function. The nickname 'Fat Lady' refers to the slightly thicker case of the 16760 compared to earlier GMT-Master models, a design choice made to accommodate the new caliber 3085 movement. This added thickness, along with wider crown guards, gave the watch a bulkier appearance, earning it the affectionate nickname. The alternate nickname 'Sophia Loren' nods to the famous actress known for her curves. Early versions of the 16760 also feature an uncommon dial variant that reads 'Oyster Perpetual' instead of the usual 'Oyster Perpetual Date,' making these highly sought after.
