Huanca, a Bolivian-American artist based in Berlin, is known for her work that intertwines painting, sculpture and performance. Her art often revolves around the female body, where layers of colour conceal its form while creating a deeper dimension, where the surface of the body becomes a complex metaphor for identity and experience.
The title ‘Morphologically’ refers to morphology - the study of structures and forms, which ties in with Huanca's method of allowing the body and skin to function as shifting surfaces where identity is reshaped. Using collages from previous performance works as a base, she then applies oil, sand and pigment, extending and transforming the performance art into an enduring painting.
Huanca draws inspiration from natural textures and uses materials gathered during her travels, giving her work a strong connection to both human and organic worlds. Her work has been exhibited in prestigious institutions such as The Zabludowicz Collection, The Marciano Art Foundation, The Rubell Family Collection and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. ‘Morphologically’ illustrates Huanca's ability to interweave the body, identity and ritual transformations, and stands as a powerful example of her unique visual language
