More information

"If only I could show you the nature out here. It is enchanting, rich and varied. It has the smiling deciduous beauty of Denmark and the strength and dynamic terrains of Norway. Here, there are large fjords and small lakes that shimmer through the trees wherever you go. Coniferous forests and cliffs alternate with green meadows dotted with oaks and ashes, so much so that Bellman could not have asked for better."

Thus describes Prince Eugen the specific character of the Tyresö area to his colleague Viggo Johansen and his wife Martha in a letter dated 3 August 1897. Between 1894-1912, the prince rented Lilla Tyresö, also known as Prinsvillan, as a summer residence from Marquis Claes Lagergren and here he would paint several of his most significant works, including "The Cloud", "Clearing After Rain" and "The Still Water". Here he also executed the painting currently at auction in 1898, which demonstrates the prince's skill as a landscape painter. With his characteristic brushwork, he masterfully captures the movements of nature in the light of the summer sun.
