A Gustavian late 18th century secretaire by N P Stenström (master in Stockholm 1781).

Birch, maple, jacaranda and stained hardwood veneer.
Gilt brass fittings. Gray limestone top. Drawer to the upper part. Seven drawers and compartment behind the drop-down desk. Lower part with drawer. Decorated with bow and arrow, torch and laurel wreath. Not signed. Key included. Length 101, width 47, height 121 cm.

More information

Nils Petter Stenström föddes i Malmö 1750. Efter läroår hos J. Chr. Naumann flyttade han till Stockholm och var under åren 1772-1773 gesäll hos Georg Haupt. Fyra år senare ansökte Stenström om att få avlägga mästarprov, men fick avslag då ämbetet inte gillade hans önskan om att få göra provet i form av ett litet bord. 1781 blev han utnämnd till hovsnickare för att året därpå utföra sitt mästerstycke i form av ett skrivskåp som idag är i Nordiska museets samling. Trots att Stenström var sparsam med sin signatur är hans möbler omisskänneliga med de för honom karakteristiska pärl- och romborneringarna, draperihängena, urnorna, samt trofégrupperna i form av musikinstrument eller pilkoger och pilbågar. Trots sina år hos Georg Haupt utvecklade han ett mycket eget och vackert stiluttryck.
