A pair of armorial butter tureens with covers and stands and two fruit dishes, Derby, England, circa 1830.

Each painted to the centre with the crest of the Earl of Shrewsbury with earl's coronet, within an apple green ground border reserved with flower and fruit panels, framed with gilded scrollwork. Red factory mark. Length tureen 18 cm, length tureen stand 22 cm. Diameter dish 20 cm.

One tureen with a rimcrack. Wear.

Provenance

Given as a gift to the present owners father by Madeleine Sager.

Comissoned for John Talbot (1791-1852), 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, 16th Earl of Waterford and Lord High Steward of Ireland (a famliy title since 1446). Sometimes known as 'Good Earl John' for his charity, having supported local schools and churches.
