Einar Jolin
(Sweden, 1890-1976)

Skeppsholmen (Battery Place) towards the Royal Castle

Signed Jolin and dated 1973. Canvas 110 x 146 cm.

More information

Jolin became the Stockholm painter above all others and its exteriors remained his own Arcadia throughout his life. Whether the city was bathed in spring sunshine or winter mist, its beauty remained untouched. In this painting, we follow the artist's sweeping view of Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace. The motifs can often be described as direct portrayals, and it is precisely this simplification and beauty that we see in Jolin's work ever since his studies in Paris with Matisse. Similarly, in this painting, all non-essentials have been stripped away and the naturalistic forms convey a pure, elegant impression in soft, gentle colours.
