More information

The subject captured by Hjalmar Sandberg is taken from the Allier River in Vichy, France. The water in the river flows gently, and on the other side, two women are working on laundry. There is a tranquil quality to the image, and Sandberg often had the ability to infuse a meditative stillness into his paintings. The artwork is not dated, but Sandberg has executed a similar painting from approximately the same location, dated 1879.
Many of Sandberg's friends, such as Carl Larsson and Carl Fredrik Hill, enjoy extensive fame today, while Sandberg's name has fallen into obscurity. This is likely largely due to the fact that Sandberg passed away at the young age of 40.
Hjalmar Sandberg's artistic journey began when he worked in a store that sold materials to students at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He became acquainted with several students, and in 1877, he traveled to Paris with Carl Larsson to pursue a career as an artist. He spent the entire summer of 1877 painting landscapes from Barbizon. His greatest success as an artist came with the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878 when the jury deemed him equally worthy of a medal as the much-known contemporary, Georg von Rosen.
The uniqueness of Sandberg's painting lies in his development of a distinct style where one can almost immediately recognize his work. He was highly appreciated for his art by his fellow artists during his time in Paris. It was also Sandberg who, together with Wilhelm von Gegerfelt, convinced Carl Fredrik Hill to go to Dr. Blanche's clinic in Passy when the breakdown occurred in January 1878.
However, already in the summer of 1879, Sandberg returned to Stockholm, where he passed away barely nine years later. Upon his return to Sweden in 1879, he was employed as superintendent and curator at the Föreningen för nordisk konst (Association for Nordic Art). Due to various side projects and his early departure, his production became fragmented. In addition to the World Exhibition, he participated in the Paris Salon in 1879, the Nordic Art Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1883, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts exhibition in 1885, as well as exhibitions organized by the Stockholm konstförening (Stockholm Art Society) and Föreningen för nordisk konst (Association for Nordic Art) . He never received any formal education. Sandberg is represented in institutions such as the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Norrköpings konstmuseum and Linköpings museum.
