A pictorial Kashan 'Mohtasham' rug, 197 x 143 cm

From around 1890-1910. An ivory ground with a polychrome landscape depicting a scene with Shah Bahram and his entourage. A red main border with motifs from Nizami Ganjavi's "Leila & Majnun".

Hajji Mollah Mohammed Hassan Mohtasham is considered one, of a very limited number, of masters who successfully re-established Kashan as a carpet hub in Iran (Persia) in the late 19th century. The term "Mohtachem" is often used and is synonymous with the finest carpets that were tied in Kashan at the end of the 1800s by Hajji Mollah Mohammed Hassan Mohtasham and his family. The carpets from his atelier are identified, for example, by light blue cotton inserts and violet silk sides
