More information

Toeko Tatsuno was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1950. She studied at Tokyo University of the Arts, specializing in painting. At school, Tatsuno created minimalist woodcuts with regular patterns, including stripes and squares. Starting in 1978, Tatsuno began creating large canvases with continuous patterns of arabesques, diamonds, squares, spheres, and various botanical and geometric motifs, both incomplete and concrete forms. The painting in the auction is a typical example with its irregular patterns and indistinct forms.

In 1994, Tatsuno exhibited her works at the exhibition "Japanese Art After 1945: Scream Against the Sky" (Yokohama Museum of Art) and the 22nd São Paulo Art Biennial. In 1995, she held a solo exhibition, "Toeko Tatsuno: 1986 to 1995," at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and in 2012, "Given Forms - Toeko Tatsuno/Kunio Shibata" was shown at The National Art Center, Tokyo.

The art audience has praised Tatsuno's innovative expression, and she was a leading figure in contemporary Japanese painting before her passing in 2014.
