Surrealists played the game Exquisite Corpse/Cadavre Exquis to stimulate creativity through collaboration. Participants would contribute to a drawing of a figure without seeing what others had done. The name Exquisite Corpse originated from a version where each contributor added a word without knowledge of those that came before, resulting in the bizarre phrase, "The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine." The current work is from André Breton's estate.
