A large Chinese painting, by an anonymous artist, Qing dyanasty, 19th Century.

Ink and colour on silk. Magpies in a garden in full bloom. Measurment with frame 108x209 cm. Laid on panel. No glass.

Wear.

Provenance

Purchased at Svenskt Tenn in the 1960's.

Literature

Magpies are seen as an omen of good fortune. This is reflected in the Chinese word for magpie, simplified Chinese: 喜鹊; traditional Chinese: 喜鵲; pinyin: xǐquè, in which the first character means "happiness". It was the official 'bird of joy' for the Manchu dynasty.
