More information

Founder and leading proponent of Lyrical Abstraction Mathieu was one of the foremost abstract painters in Europe after the second world war. His live performances became well known over the world, influencing, for example, the Japanese Gutai group. His output changed character over the years, and the late 50s are generally considered his most important period with the year of the present painting, 1958, being perhaps the strongest of all.
