More information

A founder of the Italian Transavanguardia movement in the 1970s and 1980s, Sandro Chia is best known for his Neo-Expressionist paintings and sculptures, in which he contemplates the figural through dynamic compositions and bold use of line and color. Typically capturing his subjects in moments of movement, his works convey a sense of drama and heightened emotion. Often making reference to Italy's history and culture in his works, he has employed traditional mediums such as bronze sculpture, mural painting, and mosaic, and often references Italian Futurism, aiming to connect the present and the past.

This work is a maquette for a large sculpture in the town square of Sienna, Italy, where the famous Palio horse race takes place yearly at the end of June.

Artist

Sandro Chia is an Italien painter and sculptor. He studied at Accademia di Belle Arte in Florence. Chia was a leading figure in Italien figurative painting. In the 1980s he was dubbed as a neoexpressionist, yet his more recent works has developed into a expressionist classicism. He employs vibrant, colored, swirling brushstrokes reminiscent of the dynamic Italian futurists. At the same time, his work shows a kinship with the enigmatic allegories of the 17th century. Chia borrows loosely from art historical figures. While he may he borrow from classical iconography, he interoperates and manipulates it in his own way.
