A large blue and white Korean box with cover, Joseon (1392-1897).

Round with doomed cover that is flattened to the top. Decorated to the cover and base with lotus flowers. Inscribed characters near footrim and to interior of cover. Diaemter 24.5 cm. Height 22 cm.

Interior glazecracks. Fritts. Firingflaws. Restored chips to rim.

Provenance

From the Collection of Astrid (born von Platen 1893-1982) and Nils Rudebeck (1877-1964). Thence by descent.

The couple accompanied the Swedish crown prince Gustav Adolf, later King Gustav VI Adolf on his trip to China in 1926.

Nils Rudebeck was Marshal of the Court to to Gustaf Adolf and Astrid Rudebeck were a close friend to his wife Louis Mountbatten so they came to accompany the couple on their around the world trip where China was an important stop to the Swedish Crown Prince since his great interest in the Chinese Culture. He later on founded the famous "China Club" in Sweden in 1929. Astrid Rudebeck was the daughter of the great collector of Chinese antiques hovstallmästare Carl Gustaf von Platen.
