Hans Bischoffshausen var en av de viktigaste företrädarna för de Österrikiska Avantgardisterna. Hans skapande kännetecknas av en intensiv attityd gentemot strukturer, ytor och färgen vitt. Bischoffshausen utvecklade sitt reducerade och materialstyrda skapande i samband med sina resor till Italien och Frankrike. Tidigt utförde han verk i en mer abstrakt anda för att senare blanda in sand, cement, perforeringar och spår av eld i sina verk. Hans vänskap med den italienska avantgardisten Lucio Fontana, som är förknippad med sina dukar med snitt, gav Bischoffshausen ett bredare begrepp om vad ett konstverk skulle kunna vara vilket han konsekvent utforskade i sitt konstnärskap.
