Oil on canvas 138 x 221 cm. Executed in 1884. Original frame manufactured in France. Salmson's drawing after the painting, used as basis for illustration in the catalogue for the Paris Salon 1884, enclosed.

Provenance

With the artist until his death; the artist's deceased estate; Drouot, Paris, Sale, 23 September 1895, lot 3 (”Les Orphelins”); acquired at that sale by the Swedish artist August Hagborg (1852-1921); sold by him, around 1900, to Wholesaler Per Lamm (1854-1908), Paris; sold by his widow in 1939 to Institut Tessin, Bibliothèque et Musée d´Art Suédois à Paris, with them until 1945; Rapps konsthandel (Rapp's Art Dealership), Stockholm (sold in 1947); subsequently in a Swedish private collection until 2020.
